Match reports 2010-11

Saturday 20th November 2010

Normanby Park Tigers 1 – 5 Broughton Ravers

Ravers went into this daunting away fixture knowing a defeat would almost end their title challenge – starting with possibly the most effective set up in the league (Div 1 & Div 2) Ravers looked solid from the KO.

The majority of the play was in Tigers half and corner after corner ensued – Sam Blow headed inches over and close range efforts from Will Tate and Brook Jones again threatened until the ball seemingly (definitely actually!) edged over the line. Amazingly the referee waved play on – one can only assume he was unsighted but later often waved play on stating the whole of the ball had not crossed the line.

The deadlock was broken from a great chase by Brook – a cheeky backheel from a tight corner position was met crisply by Will Tate who’s cross was pinpoint onto Sam Blows foot and the ball squirmed underneath the keeper.

The second half was one way traffic with goals from Brook, Will Tate, Will Dulson & Liam topping off a fantastic performance – the best of the season so far and one that would have pushed even the best opposition to the limit.

No need for me to mention individual performances as I would be writing all night!! I will however thank Aiden, Tom and Eoin for their understanding on Staurday and most of all their input and dedication they have shown this season – all of this squad have played their part and all should be equally proud of what is a team achievement so far.

We now look forward to rematches against opponents who will no doubt have improved themselves so we will take nothing for granted – we aim to win this league and progress as far as we can do so in the Cup.

Well done so far this season boys!!!!!

SAT 4th September 2010

Broughton Ravers U9′s    3 – 2    Broughton Ravers U10′s

Missing “the rock” Brooke Jones in defensive midfield the U9′s took to the field in their new kit for the season (AC Services (GB) Limited – THANKS!!)

New players for this season included Will Saville & Tom Summerland – both having showed considerable form in training

The approach to the game was carried out to perfection with all the players showing grit and determination whilst maintaining their trademark shape – whilst the U10′s had the edge in certain areas the younger boys showed composure in possession that created chances

It was Liam Davies that opened the scoring with a crisp effort that left all standing until the net bulged

A penalty at the other end sneaked the right side of the post as the honours ended at half time with the U9′s 1-0 up

Pressure from the 2nd half off from the U10′s saw them sneak an equaliser form a long free kick – followed by an unlucky OG off our corner blocker

That was followed by a stream of end to end flowing football from both sides - huge credit to both sides for a fast moving game in the hot sun

Heads never dropped throughout and instinctive goals from Will Tate and Sam Blow capped a creditable performance all round

We now turn to the season long campaign with our strongest squad to date – good luck boys

SAT 11th September 2010

Broughton Ravers    9 – 0    Epworth Town Colts

An early kick-off but a full strength squad were on their toes from the off, dominating possession and too strong for their opponents.

Downhill and with the wind assisting Ravers peppered the visitors goal, threatening to burst the net at every opportunity it wasn’t long before Liam Davies connected with an unstoppable drive. This was closely followed by a rare Will Tate left footer and Will Dulson chipped in with a brace of goals before half time. This capped a faultless first half performance.

The match reporter left at half time to persue a well fancied Dandino in the St leger but kept in touch with second half developments. Uphill and into the wind allowed time to play more possession football and add a further five goals, a brace from Brooke Jones was supported by goals from Eoin McHale, Sam Blow and a second from Will Tate.

Statto again produced the match analysis which showed a huge increase in the number of completed passes as the major improvement – a stronger tackling tally against what was a big Epworth Team helped in the domination of possession

Congratulations to MOTM Brooke Jones

Back to Monday night training with heads held high and proud to be top of the table – a healthy goal difference will be important this season as we look forward to our first away trip of the season to Brigg United Colts

Saturday 18th September 2010

Brigg United Colts   2-1   Broughton Ravers

On the back of an outstanding victory the Ravers travelled to Brigg to face newcomers Colts to find a number of familiar faces drafted in from the Discovery teams of last season

Ravers, without Liam Davies and Eoin McHale started strongly and were soon into their passing stride with a number of chances falling their way – unfortunately they were thwarted by a resolute and strong defence coupled with a confident keeper

Colts were very well organised and kept their shape better than the Ravers enabling them to soak up pressure and make endless timely interceptions and tackles to win back possession. Half time came with the scores level and Ravers looking forward to a following wind in the second half. Will Tate, in need of a well earned breather made way for Will Dulson to lead the attack in the second half.

The second half followed the way of the first with Ravers pressure and at times desperate defending to keep the ball out – Colts gained more confidence in possession as the game went on and switched ex Discovery Harry into a sweeper role to man-mark his old holiday bud Will Dulson. Colts took the lead with a well worked goal that cut through Ravers all too easily to leave a stright forward finish for the striker.

An inexperienced referee under pressure from the home crowd buckled too many times in favour of the home team and struggled to control a fierce encounter – Colts sat deeper and deeper but somehow the ball never fell kindly to Ravers despite  them doing everything that was asked of them.

Tom Summerland came on for Aiden Bulmer and Will Tate replaced Will Saville, as the clocked ticked by it seemed that nothing would break down Colts. A through ball brilliantly taken by Will Dulson saw him gain the half yard that he needed to run at the keeper from 20 yards out – pace and control of the ball followed by a confident finish levelled the scores.

The tackles flew in and Ravers looked the likliest ones to take the points until the 34th minute when another good passing move from Colts put their striker through again and the game was won.

A good all round performance from Ravers ended in a disappointing defeat – we aim to bounce back big style at home next Staurday to Dale Park

Oliver “new boots” Mason capped a solid performance with a well deserved MOTM – well done Olly.

Broughton Ravers 8 – 3  Dale Park Colts

Ravers returned to home territory determined to put last weeks defeat behind them – a full strength squad and positive attitude saw them take to the field wearing their hearts on their sleeves.

The returning Liam Davies was straight into the action and gave that added drive and ability that fed confidence throughout the squad – it wasn’t long before Ravers possession and strength shone through and Davies (too hot to handle) knocked in the goals for fun.

Yet again though we came across a strong minded and capable team well supported by an outstanding keeper – this in itself restricted the Ravers to a 4 – 0 half time lead. Goal of the half coming from a Will Tate throw in superbly met by Brooke Jones to head into the net – a goal that showed the huge progress that this team is making.

The second half continued the way of the first – passing, movment and many excellent exchanges of the ball brought numerous attempts at goal – time and again the Colts Keeper superbly denied the Ravers onslaught.

At the other end however Colts ran through at the Ravers defence on too many occasions and the Ravers backline didn’t hold up as well as the Colts – three goals were leaked in the second half which gave the Colts heart and damaged the Ravers goal difference.

Eoin McHale put the cap on another spritely performance with a clinical strike from way outside the box - definitely a goal to remember from the versatile midfielder. Corner after corner threatened to take the goal tally into double figures but alas the Colts stood tall and defended bravely.

MOTM was Brooke Jones who capped a credible performance with some entertaining headers, crunching tackles and that engine that goes on and on – another solid 60 minutes from the dependable Brooke

From my perspective a performance that again showed the teams development with strength in depth in most positions - particular mentions from me go to Tom Summerland who has adapted excellently into the right back position and looks more comfortable every minute he spends on the pitch, and Sam Blow who’s graft in midfield is so important to the teams flexibility – every player though should take credit for the part they played in this performance

SAT 2nd October 2010

Kirton Lindsey  1-15 Broughton Ravers

With the “Gaffer” taking a well earned break from the hot-seat it was left to Marcus Davies to guide the U9′s to their first away trip since suffering defeat at Brigg

Goals galore followed with Ravers finding themselves 7-0 up at half time and eventually cruising to a resounding victory.

Congratulations to MOTM Will Saville

Creating chances is one thing but putting them away is the difficult part – focus now moves to consolidating on the great start to the season and ensuring we take one game at a time (that old cliche already!!)

Wrawby Rovers are our visitors next and again we come across an unknown quantity – we approach this game with our minds focussed on our game alone with our trademark determination and drive  to win.

SAT 23rd October 2010

Brigg United Juniors 0 – 2 Broughton Ravers

Ravers returned to the ground where they suffered their only defeat of this season determined to put in a good performance to keep at the top of the table – with Juniors only having 7 players for this match it was always going to be a tough game for the home team

These Brigg teams are proving to be strong and battle for every ball – this they did and for all Ravers possession and passing the Home defence remained resiliant and Ravers attacks were broken down time and again. Brigg themselves were quick on the break and caught Ravers out of position too many times – last ditch defending kept the score at 0-0 at half time although Will Dulson’s crisp drive rattled the post and shot across the goal line with the keeper nowhere.

8 minutes into the second half the Gaffa had no option but to go full strength in order to press for the first goal – the game was turning into a replica of the Brigg Colts game and it was vital that Ravers took control of the game. This they did and broke the deadlock with a Liam Davies strike that the keeper stood little chance of saving – although Ravers were by far the stronger Juniors had numerous excellent chances to respond but Byron Stewart stood firm and made some great saves to keep a well deserved clean sheet.

Ravers sealed the victory with an own goal but it was well deserved given the excellent passing and movement at times during the second half – it was pleasing to come away with a win and stay in top spot.

Apologies to those players who didn’t get much time on the pitch – there will be games where we need to take this approach and I owe it to the team and the club to aim to win

Congratulations to MOTM Will Dulson who got stuck in and led the front line well

We now look forward to a freindly against Brigg Flexi from Division One where we get back down to basics and will need a top performance – this will be a prerunner for our forthcoming game vs. Normanby Park Tigers

Saturday 13th November 2010

Following an emphatic 3-2 win over League 1 Brigg United and a steady home victory over Barton Tigers the Ravers met Wrawby Rovers in the Cup Round One.

Having beaten the Rovers side already in the league this looked like a home banker but the Cup throws up many a close game – this match was no different and it was Rovers who took the lead from a floated free kick that hit the back of the net. Ravers struggled to pass the ball and the stats supported the fact that there were not enough attempts on target to merit as easier ride as the league game.

By half time Ravers though had edged ahead and with cries of “watch the pushing ref” it was Rovers who were left wondering how they would get back into the game. They somehow did and some slack defensive play allowed two sloppy goals in that gave Rovers a 3-2 lead. The away fans went delirious with thoughts of a money spinning next round tie against league One leaders messingham – they again went overboard unfortunately baying for red cards yet again when a mis-timed tackle felled their star player – referee Mr McHale though took control and a quiet word saw the game continue without the need for any further drama.

An inspired substitution saw an immediate leveller that should have been enough to inspire a home win – some great efforts followed with blocks, saves and the woodwork denying a victory. Rovers though threatened likewise at the other end and the game ended in a draw.

Ten minutes later news from HQ confirmed a replay was on the cards – away in the replay Ravers will play to win the game in normal time and avoid the lottery of penalties – expecting a tough game the approach will be to go in strong from the start – Messingham is a prize that we do not want to slip through our hands.

Epworth  (a) 10 am KO

Result        Epworth 0 – 10 Broughton Ravers

After a succession of tough games in league and cup, Ravers found themeslves up against an Epworth side obviously commited to a good work ethic, with every ball chased and competed for.  Broughton started well with a strong attacking feel.  There was good interplay from the start, everyone in the team prepared to look for a pass or provide an option.  This made for some attractive football and led to an early goal from Will Tate.  Will went on to complete a first half hat trick, with goals for Liam and Will Dulson making it 5-0 at half time.

A change of personnel at half time did nothing to slow the scoring rate, with another 5 goals in the second half, Liam netted 4 times in total, supported by two strikes from Brooke.  Sam, Will Saville and Eoin supplied good creativity, whilst Epworth were determined not to go down without a fight, forcing  Tom, Oliver and Byron to stay on their toes at the back to earn a clean sheet.

Man of The Match went to Tom Summerland for a strong performance in the defence.  Well done Tom.

A good performance and an enjoyable match, thoughts now turn to training and preparation for the last league game against Brigg Colts.
